The Body Shop is a British company that plays host to thousands of cosmetic products; it was bought in 2006 by L’Oréal. The company was established in the mid 1970s and by the 1980s had turned famously towards increased social and environmental engagement. Actions such as a ban on animal testing and the upholding of certain ethical standards were associated with the Body Shop brand as early as 1987. Since its founding in 1976, The Body Shop has opened more than 2,800 stores in over 65 countries. Anita Roddick, The Body Shop’s founder, traveled the world in her youth, learning about different lifestyles, beauty rituals and ways of working and seeing the world; she brought these experiences to her product line as well as to her company’s philosophy. Over the course of her life, Roddick has received numerous awards for her business achievements.

The Body Shop company philosophy and engagement

What is it that makes The Body Shop so special? What sets The Body Shop apart from other cosmetics companies? The answer is obvious: their social and environmental engagement. The Body Shop is known for holding the cosmetic industry to a higher standard, foregoing the typical lack of concern for the environment or reliance on animal testing for awareness-raising campaigns that call attention to these industry-wide practices. This tradition began in 1996 with a campaign to save the whales. The Body Shop has made it their goal to stand for social and political change; the store and its products are on a mission to increase public awareness on environmental and social topics; for this reason, every Body Shop store hangs posters in its windows introducing customers to its latest campaigns. The Body Shop manifesto has three pillars: enriching people (by paying fair prices to their community trade partners, investing in biodiversity, and celebrating diversity among their employees), enriching products (by sustainably sourcing their natural ingredients and developing an innovation pipeline that uses products from biodiversity hotspots), and enriching the planet (by investing in forest protection efforts and building bio-bridges, working to reduce their energy consumption and ecological footprint, and powering their stores with renewable energies).

The Body Shop never tests on animals, supports human rights initiatives, and believes that every person is beautiful and should be proud of their individual beauty. In the past they’ve also supported campaigns to raise awareness about animal testing, domestic violence, renewable energies, and sustainability. To that end, they’ve partnered with different NGOs and organizations, for example with ECPAT in 2009 (ECPAT stands for End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) to help end the commercial sexual exploitation of children. The Body Shop gathered signatures in order to demand that governments take better care of the victims of sexual exploitation.

The Body Shop is committed to recycling, renewable energies, and taking more steps to help the environment. The Body Shop only uses and sells products that are not tested on animals, and all products are vegetarian. It’s not a surprise that The Body Shop was the first cosmetic boutique to receive the Humane Cosmetics Standard (the leaping bunny insignia) for its work for the protection of animals. The Body Shop’s Fair Trade program supports fair business relationships and an end to exploitation, from the producers to the delivery drivers. The Fair Trade program allows suppliers to become more financially independent––there are currently over 50 Fair Trade projects in 30 countries around the world supported by the Body Shop.

In 1990, the Body Shop created the Body Shop Foundation. The Body Shop Foundation has supported global projects for social and environmental change, donating over £21 million to charitable causes since its inception. Roddick, its founder, died in 2007, but the charity carries on its work so that she may not be forgotten. As a pioneer in the field of sustainable business management, she inspired millions to bring their own sustainable products to market, and demand higher standards from other brands. Three years before her death, Anita Roddick received the Dame of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth for her service to the retail industry and her environmental protection efforts.

All-natural cosmetics at The Body Shop

You’ll find everything you need at The Body Shop to feel beautiful inside and out. The Body Shop product line ranges from body butter to makeup, hair care to bathroom toiletries, perfumes and skin care. For men, there are salon-quality products to choose from, including a maca root and white musk-based range of skin and haircare items. For those with discerning tastes, you’re in the right place. Perhaps you’ve seen on the news that many items typically found in cosmetics can have harmful side effects. Unbeknown to most consumers, for example, some chemicals can cause allergies. The Body Shop, a leader in its industry, has taken the reins to ban these questionable substances, including parabens, artificial preservatives, and artificial dyes. The Body Shop also offers a range of paraben-free and aluminum-free deodorants, replaced instead with natural volcanic minerals.

The Body Shop products

When Anita Roddick opened the first Body Shop in Brighton, England in 1976, she only offered a small selection of products in minimal packaging. Today, the Body Shop offers over 1,200 products, from haircare to body lotion.

Everyone wants to feel beautiful; for the founder of The Body Shop, there was only one way–– the natural way. That’s why the products from The Body Shop are inspired by nature and ethically made. The team at The Body Shop is constantly on the lookout for new natural ingredients that accentuate your natural, inner beauty. Some of the ingredients the Body Shop uses are natural sesame oil, aloe vera, shea, mango, olive, coconut, and strawberries. Where possible, these items are procured from small communities in remote areas, to give them a chance to increase their earning potential.
