Budgeting might not be the sexiest of topics, but it's something that most of us have to think about on a daily basis. We're here to help with the headache, with a round-up of the 6 best money-saving apps for iPhone and Android smartphones.

Let’s face it—we spend most of our time obsessively swiping away at our smartphones, so we may as well download some useful apps while we’re at it. And what could be more useful than savings yourself some cold, hard cash? Whether you’re at a loss as to where your money goes every month and need some help with budgeting and financing, or if you’re trying to save up for something supremely sensible (a seat on Richard Branson’s next Virgin Galactic flight you say?), there will be an awesome app out there to lend you a helping hand. Here’s a lowdown of our favorites:

Mint

Free to download on both Android and iOS, Mint is one of the most popular budgeting apps out there. With connections to almost every financial institution in the US, Mint keeps track of the activity on all of your accounts, be they credit, savings or even retirement. If you’re a visual person, then Mint will be perfect because the app generates neat little graphs for tablets to show you exactly where your money is going. It’s easy to join, guarantees total security of private information with state-of-the-art encryption technology and even offers free credit checks.

YNAB

You Need a Budget (YNAB) is designed to help you reach budgetary peace, eliminate money worries and turn you into a financial superhero. They do this via their core principles which involves ‘giving every dollar a job’ and learning to ‘roll with the punches’. YNAB’s self-proclaimed ‘drop-dead easy’ software is available for both Android and iOS, as well as web if you’re feeling old-school. Unfortunately, YNAB isn’t free to use, but at the price of a cup of Starbuck’s Coffee ($5 per month) it could be well worth it. Luckily, they offer a free 34-day trial to get you going, as well as a whole 12 months free for students.

Level Money

A so-called ‘financial GPS’, Level Money helps you to budget by calculating your monthly outgoings and then leaving you with a ‘spendable’ amount. Featured on Business Insider, Forbes and the New York Times, Level Money has caught our attention with its sleek interface and promise to help you spend with confidence. What’s more? It’s free for Android and iOS.

Unsplurge

Available on iOS only, this free app helps you to save towards a specific goal by tracking your spending. This is great for those who prefer a more hands-on approach, since you need to input the information in yourself every day, which can in turn help you to become more aware about your spending habits. The feature we like the best is the community aspect where you can see how your fellow Unsplurgers are faring, and even share tips—nothing like a healthy dose of peer pressure to get your butt in money-saving gear!

Spendee

With categories which you can personalize covering every expenditure from haircuts to late-night Ubers, Spendee is a great app for those of you who easily lose track of spending. It also offers unique features such as tracking your budget in different currencies (for those high-flyers among us) and wallets which you can share with family and friends. Be warned however, although the basic version of the app is free for Android and iOS, to benefit from their full-range of features it will set you back $1.99 a month.

Digit

Is your piggy bank gathering dust? Then Digit is the app for you. Its clever technology analyses your spending habits and takes a little bit of money every couple of days from your account and safely squirrels it away into a savings account. Digit never takes more money than you can afford and guarantees that they won’t accidentally put you into your overdraft. You can then access this rainy day account whenever you want. Better yet, it’s free to download for iPhone and Android.
